How is coaching different from therapy?
Parent coaching is not therapy. Therapy has the potential to be ongoing and typically includes the diagnosis of a DSM V condition. Parent coaching, in contrast, does not diagnose parents or children. Rather, parent coaching is solution-focused in nature, and involves identifying and addressing specific issues and patterns within families. Because they are different, parent coaching may occur simultaneously with therapy. Although I do not provide therapy to families and children, I am a Licensed Mental Health Professional, and if a family member is experiencing emotional or behavioral signs or symptoms that may require further evaluation or treatment from a therapist, I am able to refer you.
Different than a therapist, I do not work directly with your child(ren). Instead of creating a new, extra adult relationship for your child, I leverage the strongest, most influential and already existing relationship in your child's life: the relationship between a parent and child. I want to equip and encourage parents to be the champions of their own families!
